Water/Wastewater Operator IV - Utilities

Responsibilities
Inspect and test water and wastewater systems to ensure compliance with State and federal standards
Responsible for the operation, monitoring, maintenance, troubleshooting and oversite of wastewater treatment plants equipment (e.g., pumps, motors, aeration equipment, chemical feed systems, barscreen, dewatering equipment, UV systems, disinfection) in a safe and efficient manner
Perform advance wastewater treatment plant operational adjustments to ensure proper treatment in compliance with NMED and EPA regulations
Collect and conducts testing for wastewater samples for reporting and compliance purposes to include Ph, BOD, TSS, E.Coli, MLSS, and Total Chlorine Residual as needed
Record instrument readings, laboratory data, and flow measurements for compliance reports required by EPA and the State of New Mexico Environmental Department
Perform plant process control, adjust aeration and wasting rates, and maintain treatment efficiency and regulatory compliance
Detect malfunctions in wastewater treatment plant systems and equipment and take action accordingly
Responsible for the operation, monitoring, maintenance, troubleshooting and oversite of water production and treatment systems (e.g., pumps, motors, wells, gas chlorination systems, water tanks, booster pumps, arsenic removal systems) in a safe and efficient manner
Operation, maintenance, and close monitoring of Arsenic removal treatment systems for water systems to comply with NMED and EPA regulations and to provide safe drinking water to customers
Conduct advanced tests and measurements to monitor water/wastewater quality and system performance to include chlorine residuals and other process control testing and make adjustments as needed for compliance
Inspect and operates water distribution and collections systems (e.g., fire hydrants, water meters, pressure reducing valves, lift stations, manholes, odor control systems
Monitor flow and collect water and wastewater samples for analysis and compliance
Perform Blue Stakes/NM811 request for utility locates as requested to minimize the risk of damage to the system during construction and service outages to customers
Respond to water and wastewater emergencies as needed
Respond to customer complaints regarding water or wastewater problems
Complete and maintain accurate records in compliance with EPA and NMED state and federal requirements
Assist the Water/Wastewater Supervisor and/or operations staff in all phases of water and wastewater facility operations
Maintain accurate daily logs, maintenance logs, and testing records for legal and regulatory purposes
Prepare as-built drawings and updates utility base maps
Perform daily checks on lift stations and clean as required to ensure proper operation
Locate and map existing water and wastewater facilities
Inspect new water and wastewater services installed by contractors
Maintain the collection system, including cleaning wastewater mains and responding to backups
Locate sewer services using camera equipment and assist with NM811 line locating using as-built plans
Responsible for accurately completing and maintaining records in compliance with EPA and NMED agency requirements to be prepared for inspections
Perform the maintenance of water and wastewater equipment as required by manufacturers’ recommendations
Assist in the implementation of the Industrial Pretreatment Program
Respond to customer water and wastewater complaints, identify the source, and report findings to the supervisor
Provide 24-hour emergency standby coverage
Respond to emergency NM811 locate requests as needed
Support and guide other operators in emergencies or unusual operational situations as required
Qualification
Required
High school diploma or equivalent
Five (5) years full-time experience in water/wastewater facility operations providing extensive knowledge of biological processes, laboratory testing, equipment, tools, physical operations, and methods used in inspecting, cleaning, operating, and maintaining water/wastewater facilities
Valid driver's license
Must maintain a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record in accordance with County policy
Must possess either an NM Water Operator IV or Wastewater Operator IV certification at the time of hire
Must pass pre-employment background check and driving record check
Preferred
An associates degree from a two-year accredited water technology program or related field
Possession of both Level IV certifications is preferred
A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is preferred
