Responsibilities

Collects and analyzes water samples from public beaches for bacteriological content, specifically E. coli, and reports findings to inform the public about water safety
Traps and classifies mosquitoes and ticks across various sites, reports findings to state partners for enhanced surveillance of vector-borne diseases
Supports enforcement of County Sanitary Code, Ottawa County Environmental Health Regulations, and relevant State Laws in environmental health areas
Assists the public with environmental health inquiries and complaints, providing advice and solutions for sanitation and environmental issues
Conducts inspections at public bathing beaches, and investigate environmental health hazards, initiating actions to mitigate such issues
Compiles, analyzes data, and generates reports to identify trends and recommend improvements in environmental health practices
Performs other duties as assigned

Required

Applicants must currently be enrolled in or recently completed an Associate's degree program or Bachelor's degree program in environmental science, earth science, biology, chemistry, public health, or related field
Good organizational and analytical skills
Effective interpersonal and communication abilities
Proficiency in computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, database management, GIS, and Internet research
Must possess a valid Michigan driver's license
Must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations, including, but not limited to, visual and/or audiological appliances, and devices to increase mobility
Capability to perform fieldwork under various conditions, including woodlands, both on and off trail, beaches, sand dunes, swamps, and water sample collection in Lake Michigan and other bodies of water

Preferred

Completed coursework in microbiology, environmental health, or water quality
