Responsibilities

Provide leadership, supervision, and overall direction for the research section
Oversee the management and coordination of personnel, resources, and projects to ensure the section's research objectives align with mission and strategic goals
Apply broad knowledge of occupational health, environmental safety, and program management to support and enhance mission effectiveness
Develop and implement strategies for risk assessment, health protection, and operational decision-making, ensuring compliance with applicable federal and organizational policies
Ensure program activities align with Project Management Institute (PMI) methodologies and industry best practices; provide coaching and support to program managers as needed
Lead collaborative efforts with internal and external stakeholders to identify requirements, define solutions, and ensure timely and reliable delivery of products and services
Facilitate meetings and working groups to coordinate inputs across subject matter experts, program teams, and customers
Develop, maintain, and monitor documentation such as Program Objectives, Execution Plans (e.g., POEMS), ROADMAPS, and performance metrics
Ensure compliance with international standards, including ISO 9001 (Quality), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), ISO 30401 (Knowledge Management), ISO 45001 / ANSI Z10 (Occupational Health), and ISO 19011 (Auditing)
Interpret and apply Department of Defense (DoD), Defense Health Agency (DHA), and other regulatory guidance relevant to operations
Promote a culture of innovation and knowledge sharing, including the development, protection, and transfer of intellectual property (IP)
Conduct program briefings and present key performance indicators to leadership for strategic decision-making
Contribute to talent management by supporting team development, onboarding of new staff, and building high-performing, mission-aligned teams

Required

Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics
Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education
A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science
A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene
Certification from the Board for Global EHS Credentialing (formerly American Board of Industrial Hygiene)

Preferred

Background in occupational health, environmental science, program management, or related fields
Proficiency in using civilian and military personnel management systems commonly employed within the DoD research environment including, but not limited to DCPDS, C2S2, and ATAAPS
Familiarity with the Air Force Research Laboratory's mission, objectives, and research priorities
Familiarity with federal regulations, ISO standards, and enterprise-level program operations
Prior experience working in military or defense research organizations, with an understanding of the unique requirements, processes, and constraints associated with these environments
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to lead cross-functional teams and engage diverse stakeholders
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a complex and evolving environment
Experience with data-driven decision-making, performance metrics, and continuous improvement initiatives
