Intern, R&D Undergraduate Summer - Nanoscale Sciences, Onsite

Responsibilities

Creating and testing novel materials by electrochemical or chemical processes, including functional metallic coatings, nanomaterials, polymers, battery electrodes, and more
Building prototypes, including custom battery cells, electrochromic devices, microfluidic pumps and more using 3D printing, machining, or other forms of manufacturing
Learning to use modern materials characterization instrumentation, including SEM/EDS, NMR, AFM, potentiostats, tribometer, ion mill, XRF, TGA, and much more
Analyzing large datasets for the purpose of material optimization and/or deeper scientific insight
Presenting data and research findings to colleagues in both written and oral formats
Learning to operate in a R&D laboratory

Required

Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited undergraduate program
Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents, asylees or refugees in the U.S

Preferred

Strong sense of integrity and commitment to the national interest
Excellent work ethic
Strong organizational skills and detail-oriented mindset
Previously completed or currently enrolled in a chemistry, materials science, or physics lab
Experience working in a research laboratory
Experience with coding
Able to work in a team as well as independently with minimal supervision
Good communication skills, both written and oral
