Senior Attorney - Policy
Disability Rights California (DRC) is a statewide, non-profit legal organization dedicated to advancing the rights of Californians with disabilities. The Senior Attorney - Policy will lead policy and legislative advocacy efforts, ensuring access to healthcare and community-based services for people with disabilities through comprehensive legal work and collaboration with various stakeholders.
Law Practice
Responsibilities
Develop, lead, and participate in policy advocacy at the state and federal level, including commenting on and drafting legislation and regulations, and participating in stakeholder workgroups or committees
Supervise and mentor the work of attorneys, fellows, and interns, as assigned
Prepare or coordinate training materials, publications, reports, or special projects, or make presentations about legal work as necessary
Provide technical assistance and substantive training to other Disability Rights California staff on complex Healthcare/HCBS issues
Collaborate with other agencies and organizations to address systemic issues impacting access to Medi-Cal and HCBS
Participate in other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
Candidates must have a Juris Doctor degree plus seven years of experience practicing law
Demonstrated expertise in Medicaid and health care law
Demonstrated ability to lead complex policy advocacy, build strong relationships, and work well in collaboration with others
Four years of demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas of practice related to the position: representation in administrative hearings, policy advocacy, civil litigation
Excellent advocacy skills (such as research, writing, analytic, oral)
The ability to work independently with appropriate supervision
The ability to meet deadlines and perform multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail
Must be a member of the California State Bar, or eligible to practice under the Registered Legal Services Attorney Program
Preferred
Able to communicate fluently and write effectively in Spanish or an Asian language; or able to communicate using American Sign Language
Experience with and/or extensive contacts in ethnic or language distinct communities
Experience working with people with disabilities and/or experience working with people from multi-ethnic communities
