Responsibilities
Provide strategic legal guidance on U.S. and international customs and import compliance
Conduct HTS classifications, country of origin and marking analyses, and tariff impact assessments
Advise on import‑related regulatory requirements, including FDA and other partner government agency rules
Partner with legal, supply chain, engineering, procurement, and operations teams to mitigate compliance risk
Support the development and enhancement of global trade compliance policies and controls
Assist with audits, investigations, and remediation efforts
Draft and negotiate trade compliance provisions in commercial and supplier agreements
Manage outside counsel and support special compliance initiatives as needed
Qualification
Required
8+ years of legal experience, including 5+ years focused on U.S. import and customs law
J.D. and active bar membership (U.S. or foreign equivalent)
Hands‑on experience with HTS classification, COO determinations, marking requirements, and U.S. tariffs (e.g., 232, 301, IEEPA)
Experience negotiating trade compliance contract language
Strong judgment, project management skills, and ability to work independently in a remote environment
Must be interested in practicing in an alternative, fixed-term legal services model
Preferred
In‑house or advising clients in technology, telecommunications, consumer electronics, or infrastructure‑heavy environments
Exposure to international import regimes
Experience with FDA import requirements (e.g., medical devices, lasers)
Familiarity with other partner government agencies
Knowledge of export controls or sanctions is a plus
