Portfolio Controller / Head of Financial Operations
Confidential company is a founder-led portfolio of operating businesses across various sectors, and they are seeking a Portfolio Controller / Head of Financial Operations. This role involves overseeing financial operations, ensuring cash discipline, and providing financial clarity across multiple entities.

Responsibilities
Weekly cash position across all entities
Accounts receivable aging, collections cadence, and follow-through
Accounts payable prioritization and short-term cash planning
13-week rolling cash flow forecasts
Early identification of cash risk, margin drift, and operational issues
Annual budgets by entity
Monthly reforecasts based on real performance
Job-level margin tracking (especially roofing and HVAC)
Headcount, payroll, and overhead efficiency analysis
Translate financial data into clear recommendations for leadership
Build simple, operator-friendly dashboards
Define 5–8 core KPIs per business
Establish weekly and monthly reporting cadence
Ensure leadership has timely, decision-ready financial insight
Maintain clean and consistent chart of accounts across entities
Manage intercompany transactions and allocations
Oversee shared services cost allocation
Support clean, efficient month-end close without overengineering
Maintain financial hygiene as new entities are added
Own relationships with insurance brokers across all entities
Oversee insurance programs (GL, auto, workers’ comp, umbrella, etc.)
Manage workers’ compensation classifications, audits, and cost drivers
Monitor claims trends and premium impacts
Provide leadership-level oversight of:
Payroll systems and controls (not data entry)
Benefits and compliance-related costs
Banking relationships, credit cards, and spending controls
Vendor contracts and financial renewals
Onboard new acquisitions (HVAC acquisition onboarding immediately)
Help scale financial systems as new ventures launch
Support scenario modeling, growth planning, and capital decisions
Bring order and clarity as complexity increases
Qualification
Required
8–15 years in accounting, finance, or financial operations
Experience as a Controller, Senior Finance Manager, or similar
Prior exposure to multiple operating businesses
Comfortable with AR, job costing, inventory/WIP, and messy real-world financials
Pragmatic, curious, and decisive
Comfortable enforcing financial discipline
Able to push respectfully when numbers don't add up
Builder mindset—enjoys creating structure from ambiguity
Operator-friendly; understands how businesses actually run
Preferred
Strong preference for experience in construction, home services, manufacturing, or distribution
Experience in cash-intensive, payroll-heavy environments
