Human Resources Generalist

First Day is dedicated to serving individuals experiencing homelessness across Los Angeles County, and they are seeking a Human Resources Generalist to support their people operations. This role involves handling employee relations, benefits administration, compliance, and day-to-day HR operations while fostering a positive workplace culture.

Responsibilities

Serve as the first point of contact for employee concerns, working closely with the Senior Human Resources Generalist to investigate and resolve issues professionally and fairly
Advise supervisors and managers on employee performance, corrective actions, and disciplinary processes
Coordinate with external HR consultants as needed to ensure compliance and reduce risk
Act as the liaison between employees and the benefits provider; respond to benefits-related inquiries and assist in resolving any issues
Assist with benefit plan enrollments, terminations, and changes; explain benefit offerings during new hire orientation and open enrollment
Work with our benefits broker to ensure timely processing and communication
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local labor laws, including FMLA/CFRA, EEO, ADA, and OSHA regulations
Maintain and audit employee files and HRIS data for accuracy and confidentiality
Collaborate with the Compliance and Quality Assurance teams to ensure personnel-related grant requirements are met (e.g., training certifications, documentation, licensure renewals)
Track and report HR-related metrics for audits and funder reporting
Support the full onboarding cycle, including offer letters, background checks, orientation, and new hire paperwork
Coordinate offboarding tasks such as exit interviews, benefits termination, and access removal
Partner with the Accounting to ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll changes, including new hires, terminations, and pay adjustments
Support the reconciliation of timesheets, leave tracking, and deduction changes
Support internal training initiatives, such as Relias LMS tracking and reporting
Help coordinate professional development opportunities in collaboration with supervisors
Assist with the creation and implementation of new HR policies and procedures
Support the development of HR communications and employee engagement efforts
Participate in cross-functional agency initiatives

Required

Bachelor's degree in Sociology, Psychology, Communications, Human Resources, or a related field
1+ years of HR experience in generalist functions
Strong working knowledge of California employment law and HR compliance practices
Experience working in or with nonprofit or government-funded environments
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
High level of confidentiality, integrity, and sound judgment

Preferred

Experience working with populations affected by homelessness, poverty, or health disparities
PHR, SHRM-CP, or equivalent certification
Experience with HRIS platforms and LMS systems (e.g., Paylocity, Relias)
Experience in Payroll processing
Familiarity with grant compliance or working with funders such as LAHSA, DHS, or HUD
Bilingual in English and Spanish
