Responsibilities

Assists in operations, maintenance, and regulations of the mechanical and operating systems for the building and power plant. These systems include heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and all related controlling equipment
Repairs equipment to completion to ensure operational efficiency
Directs Mechanical Assistants, Firemen, Firemen Helpers, and Boiler Washers, in the performance of operating preventative maintenance duties
Monitors and read the operation performances of equipment by means of maters, gauges, charts, and computers at specific intervals during the assigned shift to determine whether equipment is functioning properly for County facilities. Maintains a log pertaining to recorded readings of controlling and regulating equipment
Obtains approval to make necessary adjustments of equipment to satisfy the demands of the respective facility for efficiency and safety of operations
Assists in maintaining energy conservation program for assigned facility by regulating electrical, pneumatic, and other automation control devices
Assists in life safety and emergency situations (i.e. fire, bomb, internal and external disasters) per facility policy disaster plan in accordance with 24 hour call back for any emergency

Required

Successful completion of an approved and recognized apprenticeship program pursuant to attaining Journeyman status as an Operating Engineer
Current and valid Stationary Engineer's License issued by the City of Chicago (Must present two weeks prior to start date)
Possession of a valid CFC (Chlorofluorocarbon) card (Must present two weeks prior to start date)
Knowledge of commercial and industrial heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and mechanical systems
Knowledge of commercial and industrial electrical, plumbing, and steam-fitting systems
Skill in locating and identifying equipment maintenance problems, making emergency repairs and taking corrective action
Ability to communicate verbally and in writing
Ability to read mechanical drawings and blue prints
Ability to supervise Mechanical Assistants, Firemen, Firemen Helpers, Boilers Washer and other staff as directed
Occasionally requires various types of physical exertion, including, but not limited to lifting, pulling, pushing, and moving objects of moderate to heavy weight
