Recreation Specialist (Part-Time) Seasonal

The City of San Marino is hiring part-time Recreation Specialists to work in the Community Services Department. This role involves assisting in a variety of recreational programs and events, ensuring participant safety, and performing clerical duties to support city facilities.

Responsibilities

Provides customer service and information about division programs, services, activities, and events to the public
Sets up and takes down equipment for special events, classes, and programs
Assists groups using parks and facilities as requested; explains and enforces park and facility use policies, rules, and regulations
Provides staff support at special events and programs
Removes trash in and around parks and buildings; performs light cleaning and custodial duties of facility rooms, picnic areas, tables, floors, and playground equipment; reports facility maintenance needs to appropriate staff
Conducts indoor/outdoor games, sports, arts and crafts, and other activities related to recreational programming; ensures the safety of program participants
Observes and complies with City and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols
Establishes and maintains a team approach with co-workers
Performs other duties as assigned

Assists with the preparation of recreation activities, camps, programs, and events
Monitors equipment and supply inventories and recommends procurement of items as needed
Performs general office duties, including basic cashiering, answering the telephone, greeting patrons, light typing, data entry, copying, and filing; prepares flyers, calendars, and newsletters
Maintains recreational facilities, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment and materials at the close of the workday and performing basic custodial duties; assists with opening, closing, and securing buildings for events, as directed
Maintains accurate logs and records of various activities, camps, and programs

Required

Must be at least 16 years of age. Candidates under 18 years of age and enrolled in high school must obtain and submit valid work permit prior to starting employment
A high school diploma or GED equivalent or California Proficiency Certificate
Two (2) years of experience working in organized recreational programming. Supervisory experience is a plus. Both volunteer and work experience are considered
Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license
Possession of valid certifications in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and to be maintained throughout employment
Knowledge of recreation, leisure, and community programs, services, and activities
Knowledge of care and proper use of recreational facilities, equipment, and supplies
Knowledge of basic safety precautions and procedures related to park and recreation program area(s) and facilities
Knowledge of proper cleaning methods and the safe usage of cleaning materials, disinfectants, custodial tools, and equipment
Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, regulations, ordinances, and procedures relevant to assigned area of responsibility
Knowledge of City and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols
Knowledge of techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff
Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar
Knowledge of general office and business administrative practices
Knowledge of methods and techniques of implementing program activities
Knowledge of age-appropriate program content
Knowledge of principles and procedures of recordkeeping
Knowledge of modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed
Ability to guide, motivate, and inspire participants and staff
Proficiency in conveying information clearly and effectively to participants, staff, and stakeholders
Competence in conducting recreational activities to ensure smooth and successful programs, classes, and events
Aptitude for quickly identifying and resolving issues or challenges that arise during activities
Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with participants, staff, and community members
Awareness of safety protocols and emergency procedures to ensure the well-being of all participants
Excellence in addressing participants' needs, providing excellent service, and ensuring a positive experience for everyone involved
Assist in designing engaging and enjoyable programs and activities
Skills in building relationships with community members, understanding their interests and needs, and effectively promoting programs to ensure strong participation
Capability to assess the effectiveness of programs, gather feedback from participants, and use data to inform supervisors of improvements
Competence in handling administrative tasks such as record-keeping and reporting
