Responsibilities

Conduct comprehensive surveys and investigations of licensed and certified health care agencies to evaluate the quality of care, services, and patient outcomes
Observe, interview, and review records to assess compliance with state and federal regulations
Analyze and interpret evidence to determine regulatory compliance, applying professional judgment and established guidance
Develop clear, concise, and legally defensible statements of deficiencies that accurately describe noncompliance findings
Investigate complaints and self-reported incidents, determining whether facilities responded appropriately to protect patient health and safety
Serve as a resource and educator for health care providers, consumers, and partner agencies by interpreting regulations and promoting understanding of compliance expectations
Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to support consistent enforcement, quality improvement, and the protection of vulnerable populations across Colorado’s health care system

Required

Six (6) years of applicable health care in a facility or program regulated by the Health Facilities and Emergency Medical Services Division
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in Nursing, Public Health, Social Work, or closely related field
A master's and bachelor's degree in Nursing, Public Health, Social Work, or closely related field will substitute for the required years of experience
An additional two (2) years of professional health care in a facility or program regulated by the Health Facilities and Emergency Medical Services Division
Cover letter required detailing how your education and previous work experience has prepared you to excel in this job
Pre-employment background check
Ability and willingness to travel independently or with a group of other health professionals up to 50% of the time throughout Colorado
Must be willing to work in environments where contagious diseases may be present
Be available in the event of an emergency and be required to report to work immediately
Must be proficient in word processing and able to use current communication technology
Must obtain an influenza shot annually prior to the onset of the flu season or wear a mask while on facility/agency premises
Must be vaccinated against COVID19
Must be able to perform annual fit testing for N-95 masks
Must be able to work occasional evening, night, weekend, or holidays depending upon circumstances of survey or complaint
Must be able to lift and carry up to 45lbs. of equipment for extended periods of time
Must be able to walk or stand for extended periods of time including climbing multiple flights of stairs
Once employed in this position, must successfully complete and apply all required surveyor training within the first six (6) months of service
Requires the use and operation of state fleet vehicles

Preferred

Experience evaluating the quality of care, services, and outcomes in health care settings through observation, record review, and interviews
Proven ability to analyze evidence and survey findings to determine compliance with state and federal health regulations
Skilled in writing clear, concise, and legally defensible statements of deficiencies
Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, with sound judgment and attention to detail
Excellent communication, professionalism, and conflict-management skills, including the ability to build respectful and productive relationships
Demonstrated integrity, accountability, and commitment to public service
Ability to manage competing priorities while working independently or collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team
