Responsibilities

Prepares accurate and complete calculations and technical reports; reviews a wide variety of studies and documentation to ensure compliance with EBMUD policies and evolving local, state, and federal regulatory requirements, including Cal/OSHA
Conducts audits and inspections of facilities, operations, materials, and equipment to assess compliance with health, safety, environmental, and industrial hygiene standards; prepares findings and recommends corrective actions
Leads or coordinates interdisciplinary teams to update safety practices, integrate new regulations, and implement process improvements that foster a resilient and safe workplace
Designs, develops, and delivers engaging safety training programs on a wide range of topics including heat illness, workplace violence prevention, lead safety, and emergency response; evaluates training effectiveness and compliance
Reviews engineering plans, designs, and specifications for capital projects, ensuring integration of health and safety considerations, sustainability principles, and climate resiliency strategies
Monitors, interprets, and evaluates data from safety, exposure, and risk assessments; conducts field and laboratory sampling and analysis; maintains data integrity for safety dashboards and compliance tracking
Responds to and investigates workplace incidents, injuries, exposures, and near-misses; prepares detailed reports and collaborates with stakeholders on corrective and preventive actions
Provides subject-matter expertise on regulatory compliance, emerging risks, and technical safety solutions; leads impact analyses for proposed laws and policy changes affecting operations
Serves as liaison to regulatory agencies, consultants, contractors, and internal clients; prepares and delivers presentations, formal responses, and communications with external stakeholders
Continuously monitors and interprets new and proposed legislation, Cal/OSHA standards, industry best practices, and scientific developments related to workplace health and safety; advises management and supports policy updates
Participates in all phases of contract administration for safety-related services; prepares scopes of work, conducts vendor evaluations, monitors performance, and ensures contractual compliance and value delivery
Champions a proactive safety culture that includes employee engagement, and cross-functional collaboration to reduce risk and enhance operational readiness
Performs related duties as assigned in support of organizational goals
Drives to worksites as needed

Required

Bachelor's degree, or its equivalent, in environmental science, industrial hygiene, safety engineering, chemistry, biology, toxicology, engineering, or a closely related field
Two years experience in workplace health and safety including accident prevention, evaluation, investigation, safety training and/or environmental compliance investigation and reporting, or enforcement of regulations which involved the review of water, wastewater, or air pollution control industrial processes
Must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the job
Must be willing to work overtime and standby as needed
Must be willing to work under adverse conditions while collecting samples or conducting field studies
Must possess a valid California driver's license
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered

Preferred

Water, wastewater or refinery treatment plant experience
Experience with EHS software
