Spacecraft Power & Electrical Systems Engineer

Nova Solvers is a U.S. engineering and technology company developing advanced imaging and sensing systems for government and defense missions. They are seeking a Spacecraft Power & Electrical Systems Engineer to lead the architecture, design, and qualification of spacecraft electrical power systems and ground electrical equipment.

Responsibilities

Lead spacecraft Electrical Power Subsystem and overall electrical system architecture, including regulation, distribution, protection, and control
Develop power budgets, load analyses, and energy balance models for all mission phases
Define and manage electrical requirements, interfaces, and ICDs across spacecraft and ground systems
Ensure compliance with safety, EMI/EMC, derating, and space qualification standards
Design and release power cards, DC/DC converters, and battery management electronics in Altium Designer
Architect and build ground electrical systems such as power simulators, test racks, and load banks
Design high-reliability harnesses per MIL and NASA standards with focus on manufacturability and maintainability
Apply design-for-manufacturability and design-for-test principles to streamline integration and production
Collaborate with fabrication houses and PCB assembly suppliers to ensure proper manufacturing, quality control, and cost optimization
Lead part selection and sourcing for power electronics, batteries, sensors, and connectors based on environmental, performance, and reliability constraints
Evaluate and qualify radiation-tolerant, radiation-hardened, and automotive-grade components suitable for space and defense applications
Interface with suppliers, distributors, and manufacturers to manage lead times, obsolescence, and alternate sourcing
Maintain part traceability and compliance with ITAR, AS9100, and government sourcing requirements
Conduct bench-level bring-up, verification, and debugging using oscilloscopes, DMMs, E-loads, PSUs, and specialized test racks
Perform certification-level debugging, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions for electrical and system-level anomalies
Support environmental testing (vibration, thermal vacuum, EMI/EMC) and qualification of flight hardware
Collaborate with firmware engineers on validation of embedded power control logic and hardware/software integration
Serve as the technical lead for power and electrical systems, mentoring junior engineers and technicians
Lead design reviews, risk assessments, and supplier evaluations
Generate and maintain schematics, block diagrams, test procedures, verification reports, and configuration documentation
Establish and uphold Nova Solvers internal electrical design standards, QMS documentation, and flight hardware processes

Required

B.S. or M.S. in Electrical, Computer, or Aerospace Engineering (or related field)
5-10+ years of experience designing, building, and testing spacecraft or high-reliability electrical systems
Proven experience designing and releasing battery systems, power conversion cards, distribution units, and ground electrical hardware
Deep proficiency in Altium Designer (schematic capture, PCB layout, library control)
Strong understanding of Li-ion battery management, DC/DC converter design, and power distribution architectures
Experience selecting and qualifying radiation-tolerant, hardened, or automotive-grade components
Hands-on experience with oscilloscopes, E-loads, PSUs, and precision instruments for troubleshooting and validation
Proven ability to collaborate with firmware, mechanical, and systems engineers on integrated flight designs
Strong vendor and supply-chain interface skills; ability to work with fabrication and assembly houses
Excellent communication, documentation, and leadership skills
U.S. citizenship required (export-controlled programs)
Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

Preferred

Experience developing ground electrical test systems and automated test infrastructure
Familiarity with radiation effects analysis, space environmental testing, and MIL-STD/NASA/ECSS standards
Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink, LTspice, or comparable circuit modeling tools
Experience managing subsystem budgets, schedules, and technical risk
Prior involvement in DoD, NASA, or commercial spacecraft programs from design through launch
