Electronic Hardware Safety Engineer III

The Electronic Hardware Safety Engineer III will design, assess, and assure the safety of electronic hardware in computer systems for sub-orbital and orbital spacecraft, ensuring compliance with rigorous safety standards.

Responsibilities

Support development and safety assurance of custom electronic hardware devices (PLDs, ASICs, FPGAs), complex COTS ICs, multi-core computer systems, and complex circuit boards across spacecraft and launch systems
Collaborate with systems and responsible engineers to derive and verify safety requirements from PHAs, FHAs, FMECAs, FTAs, and human error analyses
Review and approve safety analyses and safety requirements for electronic hardware; assess risk characterizations and open technical risks
Perform independent assessments and reviews against applicable safety standards (e.g., RTCA DO-254, MIL-STD-882, NASA, Range Safety, FAA) - Generate program safety metrics and report system safety status to stakeholders; contribute to continual safety process improvement

Required

B.Sc. in aerospace, electrical, systems engineering, or a related field
5+ years engineering experience in development assurance involving complex electronic hardware; at least 2 years involvement in generating compliance claims to safety standards
Strong foundation in system safety analysis and regulatory compliance (experience with PHAs, FHAs, FMECAs, FTAs, DO-254, MIL-STD-882)
Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to work independently and in cross-disciplinary teams

Preferred

Experience with integrated modular avionics systems safety
Experience with FAA AC 20-152A (latest guidance updates to DO-254)
Familiarity with STPA and academic foundations of software system safety
Prior experience developing or auditing against IEC 61508, ISO 26262, or RTCA/DO-178C is a plus
