Computational Neuroscientist
Merge Labs is a frontier research lab focused on bridging biological and artificial intelligence to enhance human capabilities. The Computational Neuroscientist will drive the scientific and technical roadmap for human data programs, defining objectives, architecting data infrastructure, and developing methods to quantify neural information flow between the brain and AI systems.

Responsibilities
Define program objectives and metrics: Translate the concept of human↔AI bandwidth into quantitative, reproducible measures of neural information flow; identify de-risking milestones that guide long-term progress
Architect data infrastructure: Design schemas, pipelines, and feature stores that enable multi-participant, multi-session datasets with robust QC, versioning, and metadata standards
Develop signal-processing and ML methods: Improve SNR, stability, and interpretability of neural signals; build decoding and representation models that scale with data volume and model capacity
Design and analyze experiments: Run human studies that empirically measure and expand read bandwidth using functional ultrasound imaging during naturalistic tasks
Establish benchmarks and evaluation suites: Create standardized datasets and scoring metrics that allow the team to track bandwidth gains over time and compare model architectures fairly
Collaborate cross-functionally: Work with hardware, clinical, and ML teams to align data collection, modeling, and system-level design decisions
Publish and communicate: Write internal technical reports and, when appropriate, external papers that advance the scientific understanding of high-bandwidth brain–AI interfaces
Qualification
Required
Depth in both neural data science and machine learning
Experience designing or analyzing large-scale human or animal neural datasets (Array ephys recordings, fUS, fMRI, ECoG, MEG, etc.)
Experience building end-to-end data pipelines and analysis frameworks that are clean, documented, and reproducible
Ability to think in scaling laws and information theory - understanding how data quantity, quality, and model capacity interact to shape performance
Fluency in Python (Pandas, NumPy, PyTorch, JAX) and comfort in building research code that ships
Ability to communicate with clarity and precision across disciplines and audiences
Ability to thrive in ambiguous 0→1 environments where you define the standards and systems that don't yet exist
