Chief of Staff

Responsibilities
Oversee the activities of the Executive Office, assist the Executive Director with strategic priorities, and prioritize and monitor tasks related to the execution and implementation of a broad agenda
Serve as a trusted senior advisor to the Executive Director and act in their place, as appropriate, including representing them in high level meetings and discussions
Provide oversight on time sensitive issues and initiatives that include cross-functional, organizational, partnership and community dimensions
Build and sustain an effective support structure for the site’s senior leadership team
Work extensively with colleagues across the local and national organization as well as external partners and consultants to develop and implement strategic initiatives that advance City Year Detroit’s long- and short-term plans to achieve of long-term impact and site advancement
Coordinate with the appropriate City Year Headquarters departments to ensure work in Detroit reflects the latest best practices from the organization
Collaborate with ED and site leadership to support the development of strategies to achieve and operationalize operating goals and priorities
Conduct effective project management to ensure all aspects of an effort are moving forward successfully, and there is tight coordination with other organizational initiatives and activities as needed
Work on behalf of Executive Director for critical staff position searches
Develop and oversee the creation of high-impact deliverables (such as the Annual Impact report) that reflect strong analysis and a deep understanding of the interests of various stakeholder groups (e.g. board members, senior executives, staff members, etc.)
Build strong relationships with, and earn the trust of, key internal and external stakeholders at all levels
Work with the Executive Director and other senior leaders to build and maintain relationships with state and local civic leaders, department of education leaders, the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce and other business and government relations entities
Partner with Executive Director and Leadership Team to determine how the Chief of Staff can support managing key strategic relationships with key stakeholders and/or key initiatives
Oversee the implementation of a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy for the site, requiring a wide variety of communications media, including written, visual, digital and electronic media
Ensure that the MarComm and Recruitment Director and external affairs vendors deploy appropriate strategies for reaching communications and external relations goals
Work closely with the ED and Managing Director of Development to communicate the organization’s development goals and funding priorities
Ensure that direct reports develop a short and long-term strategic recruitment plan that aligns both with the workforce development priorities of Southeastern Michigan and City Year 3.0 strategic aims and six impact programs
Support the building of relationships throughout Southeastern Michigan, specifically targeting youth development, community organization and high schools throughout the region. Plan to work collaboratively with target neighborhoods
Engage our stakeholders and support our strategic partnership and recruitment and retention efforts
Qualification
Required
Experience in a senior leadership role, preferably in a nonprofit or educational organization
Strong project management skills with the ability to coordinate multiple initiatives simultaneously
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels
Ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external partners
Experience in developing and implementing strategic initiatives
Strong analytical skills with the ability to create high-impact deliverables
Experience in marketing and communications strategy development
Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders
Understanding of workforce development priorities and community engagement strategies
