Manufacturing Cost Estimation Engineer

Responsibilities
Developing complete cost estimates for new and existing products, covering materials and hardware; machining, fabrication, and assembly labor; special processes (heat treat, coatings, NDT, welding, testing); tooling, fixturing, and inspection; and outside services/supplier quotes
Interpreting complex mechanical drawings, specifications, 3D models, BOMs, and technical requirements
Partnering with Engineering to validate manufacturability and drive design-to-cost
Working with Production/Operations to understand routing, cycle times, capacity constraints, and process flow
Collaborating with Supply Chain to obtain quotes and assess cost drivers and lead times
Supporting Program Management and Business Development with technical input during proposals
Building labor-hour estimates based on methods, part complexity, tolerances, and historical standards
Evaluating alternative designs or manufacturing methods to reduce cost and improve manufacturability
Maintaining/refining cost models and estimating templates for consistency and accuracy
Preparing estimating packages, cost summaries, and basis-of-estimate documentation
Participating in bid/no-bid reviews, weighing risk, complexity, and resource needs
Supporting RFQ responses and pricing strategies aligned to margin targets and competitiveness
Assisting in negotiations with sound technical justification for cost elements
Analyzing actual vs. estimate and partnering with operations to close gaps
Recommending improvements to estimating accuracy, shop processes, or tooling strategies
Contributing to lean initiatives, value-stream optimization, and standard work
Other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering, or related field
Hands-on manufacturing background, specifically in a machine shop environment with setup/operation of diverse machine tools
Working knowledge of machining, fabrication, assembly, and inspection methods
Proficiency in cost estimation, time studies, and/or manufacturing labor standards
Strong computer skills (Office 365) and ERP experience (Epicor/Kinetic a plus)
Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems
Clear understanding of how engineering choices influence cost, schedule, and customer value
Excellent 2D/3D drawing interpretation with full GD&T fluency
Collaborative communicator across Engineering, Production, Supply Chain, Account Management, and Sales
Preferred
Experience with AS9100, lean, and continuous improvement is a plus
