Civil Rights/Plaintiff-Side Employment Attorney - Per Diem Informal Discovery/Case Development

Private is seeking a strategic and tenacious independent attorney to play a pivotal role in case development. This position focuses on informal discovery techniques to build strong, evidence-rich cases, working directly with partners and clients to turn initial allegations into compelling lawsuits.

Responsibilities

Develop and Execute Investigation Plans: Design and implement comprehensive strategies for informal discovery on a case-by-case basis
Conduct Witness Interviews: Locate, prepare for, and conduct detailed, sensitive interviews with former/current employees, witnesses, and potential co-plaintiffs
Draft Persuasive Demands: Craft compelling pre-litigation demand letters and FOIA/Public Records Act requests that strategically present evidence and pressure opposing parties
Case Theory Development: Synthesize gathered information to help develop robust legal theories, identify crucial claims, and spot weaknesses in opposing parties' positions
Client Interaction: Work closely with clients, explaining the investigation process, managing expectations, and providing compassionate support during stressful times
Collaborate with Team: Work alongside senior attorneys, paralegals, and outside investigators to build seamless and effective case narratives

Required

Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and admission to the [State] Bar in good standing
2-6 years of substantive experience in plaintiff-side employment law and/or civil rights litigation
A demonstrated track record of conducting factual investigations, witness interviews, and informal discovery
Exceptional writing and analytical skills, with the ability to distill complex facts into clear, persuasive narratives
High degree of empathy, integrity, and professionalism when dealing with clients who have often experienced trauma or injustice
Self-motivated, resourceful, and able to manage multiple cases in a fast-paced environment
A genuine passion for social justice and a commitment to holding powerful entities accountable

Preferred

Experience drafting and negotiating pre-litigation settlements
Familiarity with federal and state employment statutes (Title VII, FEHA, ADA, ADEA, FMLA, FLSA) and civil rights laws (Section 1981, 1983)
Experience working with expert witnesses in the early stages of case development
