Laboratory Research Assistant
Indiana University is seeking a Laboratory Research Assistant for the Capone Lab in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health. The role involves conducting environmental surveillance, leading laboratory and field studies, and collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team to improve public health outcomes through research.

Responsibilities
Leads laboratory and field studies
Collaborates with graduate students and post docs, and generate new knowledge that is congruent with the overall goals of the laboratory
Designs experiments, analyzes data, and contributes to peer-reviewed publications
Resources may be available for travel to scientific meetings, and formal training is available with regards to academic writing, research ethics, rigor and reproducibility, and research management
Opportunities to develop independent research interests, write scientific manuscripts, and to gain expertise in environmental health microbiology, data analysis, project management, and academic writing
Collects environmental samples in the field
Laboratory analysis using culture dependent and independent approaches, data management, and data analysis
Works on the Capone Lab's other domestic and international projects
Responsible for the initiation, monitoring, completion, and reporting of routine to moderately complex research studies
Organizes and implements data review and analysis
Oversees the proper handling of laboratory specimens including processes, shipping, storage, and documentation and transfer to designated central laboratories
Conducts data quality assurance practices
Prepares research summaries and assists in progress report development
Maintains laboratory work areas and supply inventory
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in science or health-related discipline
Proficient communication skills
Maintains a high degree of professionalism
Demonstrates time management and priority setting skills
Demonstrates a high commitment to quality
Possesses flexibility to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment
Highly thorough and dependable
Preferred
Bachelor's degree in public health, Environmental Health, Environmental Engineering, Biology, Microbiology, Entomology, or a related field
Some laboratory experience
Fieldwork experience
Strong written and oral communication skills
Good organizational skills and attention to detail
An interest in gaining experience in environmental health microbiology
Experience with culture-based methods, molecular microbiology methods (e.g., nucleic acid extraction, qPCR, dPCR), and quantitative data analysis are a plus
