Director, Academic Assessment Operations

Achievement First (AF) is a non-profit organization that supports public charter schools in the Northeast. The Director, Academic Assessment Operations will lead initiatives to enhance academic priorities, focusing on state and national test strategies, summer professional development operations, and program procurement operations.

Responsibilities

Lead the work to set, refine and operationalize our network-wide strategy for preparing for state and national tests- inclusive of training for school and network stakeholders, accountability structures for completion and quality of preparation steps, leadership across network teams, communication systems and support structures. Ultimately responsible for schools meeting all state and federal required steps for assessments and high quality execution of assessments operations on-site
Serve as District State Test Coordinator and liaison with state agencies. Internalize and maintain deep knowledge of all compliance requirements, including but not limited to accommodations, alternate assessments, completion records, and test security protocols
Define vision of excellence for critical operational assessment work by documenting and codifying goals and best practices for assessment planning and execution
Monitor, revise and operationalize the systems and resources AF uses for sharing information, tracking required preparation action steps, and supporting compliance with legal requirements, including accommodations
Support schools during test planning and administration, including leading virtual touchpoints and in-person visits during testing for observations, staffing support, and leadership meetings
Determine, develop (or oversee development of), and implement training for school based State Test Owners for all State and National assessments. Ensure State Required training is completed by required staff for all assessments
Hire and manage a team of Regional State Test Coordinators who lead support for schools in each region. Oversee the hiring and onboarding process. Manage team systems and communication
Manage Regional State Test Coordinators in their support of school based test coordinators through effective meeting and support structures
Ensure Regional State Test Coordinators hold schools accountable to completing required actions for testing readiness
Coordinate across network teams- in particular Team School Operations and Team Special Services to ensure all teams supporting schools are aligned and that accountability structures are strategic with existing systems
Collaborate with other Network teams to develop support plans for students requiring accommodations and MLL services, and for schools with scholars required to take alternate assessments
Develop, refine and operationalize the strategies AF uses to run over 53 days of Summer Training each year. This work will include at least the following workstreams: Vendor Sourcing: Research, review bids and finalize vendor choices for a variety of Summer PD operational needs including (but not limited to) meals, snacks, A/V, etc
Develop systems for documentation and communication with other Summer PD planners to ensure all stakeholders have information they need and there are clear points of transition between vendors, Director and on-site summer PD planners
Manage execution of contracts through ensuring review, negotiation of rates and terms, reviewing final invoices and ensuring timely payment
Develop, manage and execute process for all external and internal curricular materials schools need to purchase K-12- including purchasing playbooks, purchasing lists, inventory systems, material audits, school-based curricular purchasing project plans, organization and storage solutions, and specific materials management guidance for each curriculum across all grade levels
Leads training for school-based staff to implement curricular purchasing systems and best practices. Partners directly with Team School Operations to ensure all curricular purchasing action steps are captured in Ops Readiness plans

Required

Bachelor's degree required
5 Years of experience leading complex operational work in K–12 education, assessment operations, academic programs, or a closely related field
Demonstrated success managing large-scale, compliance-driven initiatives across multiple sites or regions
Strong command of operational strategy, systems design, and execution, especially in highly regulated environments
Ability to translate priorities into clear, actionable operational plans for schools and network teams
Experience building, documenting, and refining processes that drive consistency, quality, and accountability
Comfort leading cross-functional work and influencing without direct authority
Proven people management skills, including hiring, onboarding, coaching, and performance management
High attention to detail paired with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple workstreams simultaneously
Strong project management instincts, with the ability to anticipate risks and course-correct quickly

Preferred

Spanish language proficiency is a plus
