Technical Academy Lab Technician

Responsibilities
Prepare, stage, and maintain classrooms, labs, and the fabrication shop to support instructor‑led training and hands‑on exercises
Install, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and controls equipment used in training and prototype evaluations
Assist with assembly activities including wiring, piping, brazing/soldering, leak‑checking, charging, and preventive maintenance on training units
Diagnose equipment issues during set‑up or live instruction; escalate complex issues to engineering or maintenance as needed
Identify and source parts, drawings, diagrams, and technical documentation; track consumables to minimize downtime
Support instructors with demonstrations, assessments, student activities, and collection of test data
Maintain lab cleanliness, organization, safety compliance, and equipment calibration; complete relevant documentation and logs
Follow applicable standard operating procedures and quality standards; recommend improvements to lab processes, fixtures, and workflows
Collaborate with engineering and training staff on prototype builds, functional tests, and post‑test teardown activities
Adhere to environmental, health, and safety requirements, including proper handling of refrigerants and lockout/tagout procedures
Performs other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
Requires an associate degree in HVAC, mechatronics, industrial maintenance, or a related technical discipline
5+ years of hands‑on experience working with mechanical, electrical, HVAC, or controls equipment in laboratory, maintenance, or testing environments
EPA Section 608 certification (Type II or Universal)
Working knowledge of refrigeration cycle fundamentals, thermodynamics basics, and mechanical/electrical safety
Proficiency using hand and power tools; basic fabrication skills including cutting, drilling, fastening, and brazing/soldering
Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, P&IDs, and technical drawings
Familiarity with measurement tools such as multimeters, gauges, scales, manometers, and data‑collection devices
Foundational understanding of controls/automation concepts such as sensors, actuators, and variable‑speed equipment
Strong communication and teamwork skills for supporting instructors, engineers, and learners
Effective organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and maintain accurate documentation
Commitment to continuous learning, including staying current with safety codes, refrigerant regulations (including A2L requirements), and emerging technologies
Preferred
A2L refrigerant handling training/certification
