Library - Summer Learning Intern

City of Boise is seeking a Summer Learning Intern to help connect library programs with kids and families through various community events. This internship offers valuable experience in community engagement, education equity, and youth programming while working alongside library professionals.

Government Administration

Responsibilities

Assists in the researching, planning, developing and hosting of the library's community summer learning programs for people of all ages and backgrounds
Works with library staff to organize and facilitate community-wide events by working across all 5 library locations
Offers outreach to schools, parks, clubs, groups and underserved communities throughout Boise by using community partnerships
Liaises with individuals, community partners and organizations to successfully execute program goals
Works with the public in a library setting
Performs general library duties including checking in returned materials using library computer systems
Maintains library collections which could include a variety of circulation tasks, including recovering missing materials, accurately sorting and shelving materials in an orderly manner and identifying and repairing damaged or incomplete library materials
Issues library cards to new users and maintains accurate user registration records
Helps in scheduling study and meeting rooms for internal and public use
Provides assistance to library users in areas of technology, printing and other resource connections
Works with an assigned mentor to meet the learning objectives of this internship: develop an understanding of how a public library works, from funding to defending the public’s freedom to access information, and how a variety of scholastic degrees apply to library work as a profession; experience what it means to work on the ‘front line’ with underrepresented and underserved populations, specifically in a library setting; and gain experience in creating a data driven literacy program using best practices to impact early childhood reading and adult and family education

This internship is a valuable opportunity for a wide variety of majors, which include, but are not limited to, English or literature, social work or human services, political science, world studies, psychology or sociology
Engage and work with the public, including working with youth and families from a variety of backgrounds
Apply customer service techniques
Utilize basic computer skills
Learn and use automated library systems
Work independently and use initiative while performing duties
Exercise tact, patience, diplomacy, cultural sensitivity and courtesy when dealing with people
Troubleshoot and problem-solve
Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance
Perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation
Valid state-issued driver's license
City of Boise background check processes which includes a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation
Driving Record Check
While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently lifting/carrying up to 10 pounds, occasionally lifting/carrying up to 35 pounds and rarely lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds
The employee is always pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds, frequently pushing/pulling up to 75 pounds and occasionally pushing/pulling up to 100 pounds
The noise level is occasionally moderate
Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, smell and touch
Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception
Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance
Position requires hand/finger dexterity
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, areas of dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter
