Clinical Laboratory Scientist -Technical Specialist- EDRP Approved
The VA North Texas Health Care System is looking for a Clinical Laboratory Scientist - Technical Specialist. The role involves providing expert advice and consultation for complex tests, performing specialized testing, and maintaining laboratory equipment, while adhering to biosafety regulations.

Responsibilities
Advises all organizational levels on various aspects of specialized testing, including appropriateness that takes into consideration clinical context
Performs specialized testing, evaluates results for accuracy, and reports results. Performs, reports, and evaluates results of proficiency testing. Analyzes outliers, investigates cause, and provides corrective actions
Maintains and documents the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment. Uses, calibrates, identifies malfunctions, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance of laboratory equipment. Diagnoses deviations in test performance due to instrument malfunction
Performs and documents quality control and assurance activities and corrective actions related to test performance using statistical principles and theories of performance improvement. Performs appropriate corrective actions when required
Adheres to practices and regulations governing biosafety and biosecurity in the workplace
Incorporates principles of educational methodology in the instruction and training of new employees and students and in the laboratory's in service/ continuing education program
Advises on alternate testing to overcome ambiguities in the clinical diagnoses
Advises on course of action to follow when results or samples obtained are unacceptable and coordinating or performing quality control review and method verification activities
Prepares reports, maintains records, and provides administrative information. Prepares and presents work-related information to the supervisor and upper management

Education. A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university
Certification. Candidates must meet one of the certification options below: Generalist certification as an MLS given by ASCP BOC or AMT. Generalist certification as an MT given by ASCP BOR or AMT. Categorical certification or Specialist certification by ASCP or AMT. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria)
GS-12 Experience: 1 year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade level is required for all GS-12 assignments
Knowledge and understanding of concepts, principles, methodology of medical laboratory technology, regulatory and accrediting agency requirements, medico-legal requirements, and pertinent statistics sufficient to perform complex diagnostic tests
Knowledge of instructional techniques to instruct newly hired clinical laboratory scientists and clinical pathology residents in proper performance of tests and applications of laboratory procedures
Knowledge of one or more advanced clinical laboratory functions
Skill to apply new scientific/technical developments to develop procedures for new tests and modify existing procedures and methods to resolve problems relative to complex and difficult situations
Ability to provide guidance and technical direction to accomplish the work of a clinical laboratory
Ability to provide guidance and technical direction to accomplish the work of the specific laboratory section
Preferred
Five-years of creditable Tuberculosis experience
Experience developing standard operating procedures
Ability to troubleshoot issues with instrumentation without supervision
Experience in developing method validations
Experience instructing new employees and students
