Director of Housing and Residential Programs
The University of Vermont is seeking an experienced, people-centered leader to serve as Director of Housing & Residential Programs within University Housing & Dining Services. This role involves providing strategic and day-to-day leadership for a large residential system serving approximately 5,800 undergraduate and graduate students, ensuring high-quality programs and services while fostering a collaborative leadership culture.
Responsibilities
Provide strategic and day-to-day leadership for the residential portfolio and supervises the unit heads for Residential Education; Residential Learning & Academic Engagement (RLAE); Housing Operations; and Strategic Initiatives & Planning
Provide leadership for a large and complex residential system serving approximately 5,800 undergraduate and graduate students across 41 residence halls and 11 residential complexes
Translate institutional and divisional priorities into clear, actionable direction; ensuring alignment and consistency across units; and providing steady, accessible leadership that supports unit heads in delivering high-quality programs, services, and student experiences
Coach and support leaders through complex operational, people-management, and change-management challenges while fostering a healthy, collaborative, and accountable leadership culture
Serve as the primary escalation point for housing and residential issues and functions as the Executive Director’s proxy for the residential portfolio
Serve as member of the UHDS Executive Leadership Team, working in close partnership with the Executive Director, the Associate Director of Business Operations, and the Assistant to the Executive Director to ensure coordinated leadership, informed decision-making, and alignment across housing, dining, and business operations
Qualification
Required
Master's degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and additional experience
Eight (8) years of progressively responsible leadership experience in university housing, residential life, or a closely related functional area, including experience supervising senior-level staff or unit heads
Demonstrated experience leading complex operations within large, multifaceted residential or student services organizations
Strong operational, organizational, and decision-making skills in high-accountability environments
Proven ability to lead through change, coach experienced leaders, and manage competing institutional priorities
Preferred
Experience leading housing or residential systems serving 5,000+ students or comparable scale and complexity
Demonstrated success supervising multiple senior leaders and building high-functioning leadership teams
Experience working within unionized environments and shared governance structures
