Responsibilities

Verifies patient information by interviewing patient; recording medical history; confirming purpose of visit
Prepares patients for examination by performing preliminary physical tests; taking blood pressure, weight, and temperature; reporting patient history summary
Collects data accurately and ensures that all information is entered into the patient’s medical record in EHR
Prepares and stocks examination and treatment rooms
Clean and sterilizes instruments
Assists provider with minor office procedures
Schedules Outpatient testing, Procedures or Surgeries
Manages Referral process
Hospital Admissions
Testing and Procedures
Pre-certification
Triage patient phone calls per site’s protocol
Process Prescription Refill requests per Physician’s protocol
Performs Ancillary testing: EKG, Spirometry, Cryotherapy, etc
Laboratory testing may include Rapid Tests, Urinalysis, Bilirubin, Auto CBC, and Phlebotomy
Reviews lab and test results. Provide follow up to patient per provider’s instructions
Perform blood draws competently & expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible
Record phlebotomy requisitions
Identify the patient by comparing patient information on the requisition to the patient’s verbal information before venipuncture is performed
Label & records all test tubes and complete log procedures as outlined in the lab procedure manual
Demonstrate knowledge of color top tubes to use, as well as the proper volume of blood needed, and test requirements
Follow universal precautions always
Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule and recording results in the quality-control log
Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique and following department procedures
Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the ordering provider or nurse; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders
Dispose of sharps & any containments properly using
Prioritizes STAT, scheduled, and walk in appointments accordingly
Enhances phlebotomy department by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests
Centrifuge blood samples as required by test(s)
Practice infection control standards at all times when working with patients & equipment
Maintain regulatory requirements, including all state, federal, and local regulations
Participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities
Complete assignments efficiently & in a timely manner
Ability to handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or others in a professional manner
Ability to work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail, and maintain a positive attitude
Provide health education to the patient as needed
Performs all duties in compliance with Galen’s clinical policies and OSHA standards
Maintains clean and neat work area
Active participation in process improvement efforts
May be required to assist other team members based on office demands
Recognize and demonstrate cost-effective measures in utilization of supplies and equipment

Required

High School graduate or equivalent
Must be a Certified Medical Assistant from a nationally accredited institution, as well as a Certified Phlebotomist
One year of relative medical assistant experience in the clinical setting is required if completion of a Medical Assistant program qualification is not met
Individual must be BLS trained and certified at all times
Must be computer literate
Basic Life Support certification is required
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Ability to multi-task and work as a team player
Excellent computer skills
Ability to follow clinical pathways and protocols
Excellent customer service skills, with the ability to handle higher-stress phone calls

Preferred

1-3 years' clinical medical assistant experience
Electronic Medical Record experience
Previous Clinical and Phlebotomy experience
