Transport Engineer Spec I, II, or III

The Texas Department of Transportation is seeking talented Engineering Specialists to join their Central Design Section. In this role, you will work on a variety of transportation projects that impact the safety, mobility, and growth of communities across a twelve-county area.

Government Administration

Responsibilities

Assists in planning and coordinating office operations
Assists in writing general notes, specifications and provisions
Attends specialized design schools
Learns specialized design and project development techniques
Performs advanced and specialized design work
Performs advanced and specialized drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features
Performs construction inspection
Performs traffic engineering design work, analyzes traffic and accident data and recommends solutions for traffic problems
Prepares environmental documents
Prepares field notes
Prepares quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right-of-way maps
Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans
Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications
Reviews work done by others for drafting and calculation errors
Schedules, coordinates and prepares documents for public hearings
Uses additional automated design tools or specialized design procedures in areas including bridge/culvert detailing, traffic management, geometric design, signal lighting design, retaining walls and building design
Uses automated programs, interactive graphics and the Design and Construction Information System
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
Performs advanced and specialized drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features
Trains less experienced technicians
Performs advanced and specialized design work

Required

High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies
Transportation Engineer Specialist I: 6 years drafting, design, plan preparation
Transportation Engineer Specialist II: 7 years drafting, design, plan preparation
Transportation Engineer Specialist III: 8 years drafting, design, plan preparation
Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle
Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities
Design and plan preparation methods and requirements
Performing intermediate drafting
Performing advanced drafting
Advanced and specialized design/drafting procedures
Plan review methods, processes and procedures
Fingering-picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand
Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and fingers
This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical
Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing
