Responsibilities

Financial Counselors serve patients and families by providing expertise in explaining benefit levels, insurance plans, and their applicability to patients planned or received services
Financial Counselors must interpret and explain benefits, explanations of benefits, authorizations and/or denials of services to patients and their families
Financial Counselors must be able to facilitate and manage follow through/coordination to obtain Single Case agreements for Out of Network patients when possible. They will work with Case Managers, Department Managers, the Director of Managed Care, and insurance company personnel to do so. They must explain the process of requesting a waiver/gap approval to patients and families
Financial Counselors are the first line in explaining Shepherd Center’s charitable programs and assist patients/families in completing/submitting the paperwork. They must explain any excluded services and administer any flat rate collections (i.e. PRP services)
Maintains the cash drawer, completes collections of copays, deductibles, planned services, processes credit card transactions, and communicates with the patient or guarantors
Financial Counselors must meet with and assist patients and families on the floors as required, demonstrating compassion, poise, and financial expertise
Must have working knowledge of CMS required notices, the No Surprises Act, delivering estimates and explaining them, and general managed care concepts. Must be able to negotiate and establish payment plans with patients as needed
Periodically rotates through all clinical departments to maintain fundamental insurance verification, registration, and Patient Access knowledge. Will cover all positions as needed

Required

High School Diploma
Two (2) to Three (3) years' experience in insurance, preferably in a hospital setting
Knowledge of Commercial, Managed Care Contracts and Governmental Insurance Plans
Experience in automated systems, overall knowledge of business office procedures and hospital policy, knowledge of third-party payors
Excellent communication and customer service skills
Familiar with general office equipment; fax machine, calculator, copier, imprinter and embosser
Must have a working knowledge of PC spreadsheet and database software
Strong math aptitude required

Preferred

Associates or Bachelor's degree preferred
CPAR, CHAA or CHAM preferred
