Financial Controller

Responsibilities

Formulates, receives, and recommends policy proposals related to accounting, auditing, budgeting, payroll, tax matters, statistics, and office procedures
Prepares or directs preparation of monthly trial balances and financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and supporting schedules
Manages internal auditing programs to ensure accuracy of records and compliance with established policies and procedures
Prepares operating budgets and financial forecasts in coordination with the COO, department heads, and committees; analyzes budget variances and recommends corrective actions
Works closely with external auditors to ensure compliance with Club policies and accepted accounting standards
Prepares and verifies financial reports for regulatory agencies and professional organizations
Directs and verifies inventories of food, beverage, supplies, equipment, furnishings, and other Club assets
Ensure insurance records for Club property and assets are properly maintained
Reconciles monthly ledgers, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, bank accounts, asset accounts, and wage accounts
Advise department heads on the financial aspects of their operations and responsibilities
Prepares or supervises preparation of federal, state, and local tax returns
Prepare accounting reports for the Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and other Club committees
Ensures effective receiving and storeroom control procedures are in place and consistently followed
Provides monthly cash reconciliation statement and cash flow projections taking into consideration forecasted results and capital expenditures
Cross trains administrative staff on accounting tasks
Attend Board meetings, finance committee meetings, and other meetings as required
Oversee member billing, collections, and accounts receivable in accordance with Club policies
Maintains vendor credit applications and records
Maintains fixed asset ledgers and prepares depreciation schedules
Audits member and guest charges, cash sheets, and expenditures to ensure accuracy and compliance
Safeguards Club funds and oversees bank deposits and check issuance
Maintains tournament accounting records and financial statements
Manages investment programs and invests excess funds to optimize cash flow
Monitors delinquent accounts and advises management on potential risks
Oversees issuance and management of membership certificates, including transfers, cancellations, refunds, and recoveries
Collaborates with external accounting firms and advisors
Prepare the annual financial report for presentation at the Club’s annual meeting
Works with the COO and department heads on capital budgets and long-term financial planning
Manages and evaluates automated financial management and accounting systems
Maintains confidentiality regarding Club, member, and employee information
Negotiates and secures property and casualty insurance coverage to protect Club assets

Required

Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university; with a concentration in business or administration and an accounting major or minor, including coursework in financial analysis and auditing
Five to seven years of professional accounting experience, with at least two years at the Controller level or equivalent, preferably in a club or hospitality environment
Consistently monitors cash flow and financial performance
Ability to calculate figures and amounts related to bookkeeping, payroll, budgeting, statistical analysis, and probability statements
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations
Ability to analyze investment performance and returns
Knowledge and understanding of retirement and benefit plans
Knowledge of applicable federal and state employment laws and best practices
Knowledge of and ability to perform required roles during emergency situations
