Information Technology Technician

Responsibilities

Research, recommend, install, and test hardware, software, and network configurations for PC's in order to provide an information system which effectively meets the City's needs
Test and evaluate software and hardware products in order to determine applicability and value to City operations
Test, maintain, and monitor computer programs and systems, including coordinating the installation of computer programs and systems
Write equipment/software specifications and end user documentation
Administer and control network security and access by assigning user ID codes, passwords, and network privileges
Maintain hardware, software and network security standards per City policy
Install and configure internal hardware components such as memory, drives, PC's/servers in order to maintain or enhance system operation and capabilities
Attach devices to the LAN; configure devices to use the LAN for applications; and maintain LAN documentation in order to establish and maintain departmental LAN's
Perform troubleshooting and fault isolation on PC's, servers, LAN's, or related system components in simple configurations in order to maintain system availability
Provide staff and users with assistance solving computer related problems, such as hardware malfunctions and program problems
Work as a liaison between various departments and the IT department
Manage and maintain the City's Active Directory
Manage and maintain city cell phones, air cards and corresponding documentation
Perform related work tasks as required

Required

Knowledge and training of local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN), Microsoft OS's, Microsoft Office suite software, Microsoft AD, Microsoft Exchange
Ability to troubleshoot hardware, software issues and to work effectively with vendors, software users, other agencies, and the public
The ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with employees and to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing
Ability to speak and understand the English language fluently and use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling
Able to ensure compliance with and follow standard operations practices and procedures common to local area networks
Skill in the operations of the equipment common to the City
Ability to use personal computer equipment to access, retrieve, or input information using DOS, Windows OS's (workstation and server) including Microsoft Active Directory, MS Office software or other standardized software common to the work unit or as assigned
Associate's degree from an accredited educational institution in MIS, Computer Science or related field with two or more year's network administration and support experience or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities
Possess and maintain a valid Wisconsin Motor vehicle operator's license is required
