Senior IP/Patent Attorney

Latitude Legal is assisting a leading, high-growth company in the energy and advanced technology sector in finding a Senior IP/Patent Attorney to join their dynamic Legal team. The role involves managing and optimizing the global patent portfolio, supporting U.S. and international patent prosecution, and advising on IP strategy in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

Manage and optimize the global patent portfolio, including U.S. and international patent prosecution, maintenance, and strategic portfolio development aligned with business objectives
Develop and improve IP systems and processes, including invention disclosure intake, patent filing workflows, docketing oversight, and portfolio analytics
Partner closely with engineering, R&D, and product teams to identify, evaluate, and protect innovations, including conducting invention harvesting sessions and advising on patentability
Advise on IP strategy related to new products, technologies, and market expansion, including freedom-to-operate considerations and competitive landscape analysis
Support IP due diligence and risk assessments for strategic initiatives, partnerships, and potential M&A or investment activity
Coordinate domestic and international filings, including PCT strategy and foreign jurisdiction decision-making
Monitor competitor patent activity and industry trends to inform defensive and offensive IP strategies
Ensure compliance with internal policies and external legal requirements, including proper IP ownership, assignment, and confidentiality protections
Contribute to long-term IP roadmap and innovation strategy, scaling practices to support rapid company growth

Required

JD from an accredited law school; active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
10+ years of experience in patent law, including substantial responsibility for U.S. and international patent prosecution and portfolio management
Demonstrated experience managing and scaling global patent portfolios for technology-driven companies, preferably in energy, advanced technology, hardware, materials, or related fields
Strong technical background (e.g., electrical, mechanical, chemical, materials science, physics, or related engineering discipline)
Proven ability to work closely with engineering, R&D, and product teams to identify, protect, and strategically leverage innovation
Demonstrated experience supporting in-house legal teams, with the ability to integrate quickly and operate independently
Familiarity with PCT filings, foreign prosecution strategies, and jurisdictional considerations worldwide
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex IP concepts into practical business guidance

Preferred

Experience supporting IP due diligence, freedom-to-operate analyses, and strategic transactions is a plus
