Staff Accountant, Sheriff's Office
Stearns County is dedicated to providing exceptional public services and is seeking a Staff Accountant for the Sheriff's Office. The role involves managing and maintaining financial records, preparing and analyzing financial information, and ensuring compliance with accounting principles.
Government Administration
Responsibilities
Performs accounting entries, transactions and reconciliations to provide accurate and timely financial records for department operations and reporting using various mediums such as spreadsheets and databases
Prepares grant budgets and the necessary budget adjustments in order to properly fund and monitors grant awards; prepare the necessary monthly/quarterly reports of financial or statistical data to funding agencies
Interprets and analyzes fiscal data; provides guidance for future departmental activities
Monitors contracts, prepares invoicing and tracks bills to various agencies to account for accurate documentation and follow up
Monitors and reconciles cash balances for inmate funds, department credit cards and checking accounts to ensure charges to correct accounts and proper documentation
Oversees the reporting and processing of claims and inmate medical charges to ensure the receipt of maximum revenue reimbursements
Reconciles various jail medical and pharmacy bills and coordinates with collection agencies for revenue recapture
Documents and categorizes various service purchases in order to meet reporting requirements and obtain state reimbursement
Collaborates with the Auditor-Treasurer’s office to coordinate check issuances, address changes, stop payments, cancellations, voided checks, and system adjustments to secure accurate data processing
Coordinates all expenditure and revenue requests from the public and staff utilizing documented information and garnered reports to certify responsive customer service
Oversees the preparation of annual financial statements, budget requests and reports to guarantee up to date data analytics
Serves as Treasurer of the Violent Offenders Task Force preparing bills, financial reports, forfeiture tracking and preparation of deposits and records minutes of meetings pursuant to MN data practice laws
Prepares annual state audit documents for review by State Auditor
Attends work regularly and in a timely manner
Performs other duties as assigned or apparent
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree or higher in accounting or finance
Two years of progressively related experience in accounting, auditing or financial management
Experience using Microsoft Office Suite
Preferred
Knowledge of the objectives and functions of a law enforcement agency
Knowledge of state and county laws and procedures related to accounting and finance
Knowledge of governmental accounting principles, procedures and record keeping
Knowledge of the principles of monitoring and projecting expenses and general auditing
Knowledge of the laws, rules and procedures applicable to the accounting function of the unit to which assigned
Ability to analyze workflow problems and assist in the design of procedures
Ability to organize and prioritize work in a timely manner
Ability to develop and interpret accounting records, documents, and reports
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
Ability to organize and prioritize work
Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing
Skilled in multiple languages
