Responsibilities
This position is a fully operational, licensed Professional Engineer responsible for designing transportation projects and managing the complete design process from scoping through advertisement
The role prepares construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates for highway improvement projects and provides technical oversight to ensure work complies with departmental policies, procedures, and design standards
The Professional Engineer I serves as the CDOT engineer of record, stamping plans in accordance with licensing regulations, and acts as the project manager during the design phase for infrastructure projects, planning efforts, and environmental studies
The position provides ongoing design support during construction, coordinates with specialty units and external partners, performs conceptual design as needed, and conducts occasional site visits and inspections to resolve field-related design issues
The position will also assist in mentoring less experienced engineers and team members as well as assisting the Resident Engineer with special tasks such as developing workflows, determining areas to improve design consistency, etc
Delivering a successful transportation project requires coordination with a wide variety of groups
Our Project Engineers work with and provide expertise to CDOT specialty groups (e.g. utilities, right-of-way, survey, environmental, materials, traffic, geotechnical, planning), Federal Highway Administration, US Forest Service, US Geological Survey, Army Corps of Engineers, US Fish and Wildlife, Colorado Dept. of Public Health and Environment, Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Motor Carriers Association, local government, elected officials, drainage basin controlling agencies, public utilities, railroads, businesses, consultants, contractors, local community groups, and so much more

Qualification
Required
Current, valid licensure as a Professional Engineer from the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers, and Professional Land Surveyors
or Current, valid licensure as a Professional Engineer from another state
Applicants who do not have a current, valid licensure as a Professional Engineer from the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers, and Professional Land Surveyors will be required to obtain this within six months of hire
Must pass a pre-employment screening which may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks
A current valid driver's license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position
