The DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of people and goods in New York City. They are seeking a Director of Engineering Support to oversee citywide operations related to traffic control and engineering, manage a team of inspectors, and ensure the effective implementation of traffic control measures.

Responsibilities

Support citywide operations within the five Borough Engineering Offices
Perform tasks of moderate to complex difficulty in the specialized fields of traffic control and engineering
Lead and coordinate a team of inspectors responsible for conducting field investigations, traffic condition studies, signage inspections, sign order preparation, and data collection across all boroughs
Collaborate with the Borough Engineers and supervise the Deputy Executive Director
Manage a multitude of in-house projects
Assign fieldwork
Ensure timely and accurate Sign Information Management System (SIMS) work order preparation and approval
Support the development and implementation of new traffic control measures such as signage, markings, and vertical elements citywide
Review team output for accuracy
Prepare detailed reports and correspondence
Analyze data to identify operational needs
Assist in the evaluation of policy and procedural improvements related to their assigned tasks

Required

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and four (4) years of full-time experience in city planning, at least eighteen (18) months of which must have been in a managerial capacity
Education and/or experience which is equivalent to '1' above. However, a baccalaureate degree and eighteen (18) months of managerial experience in city planning is required of all candidates
Graduate work leading to an advance degree in city planning or related field may be substituted for up to two (2) years of the non-managerial experience on a year-for-year basis
Graduation from an accredited United States Law School may be substituted for two (2) years of non-managerial experience
A valid NYS Driver's License is required
Exceptional communication and organizational skills
Proficiency with transportation engineering practices
Ability to manage competing priorities

Preferred

Familiarity with the SIMS program is preferred
Excellent communication skills and key knowledge of traffic engineering principles and standards
