The State of Alaska is looking for a Local Government Specialist to work closely with rural communities, providing support in areas such as local elections, financial management, and emergency response. The role involves building strong relationships and being a trusted advisor to help improve local government functions.

You'll be a trusted advisor, a relationship-builder, and a go-to resource on everything from Alaska Statute Title 29 to providing safe drinking water
You’ll build strong relationships, explore diverse regions of Alaska, and play a key role in making local government work better for everyone
Qualification
Required
Understanding the unique challenges and strengths of rural communities
Knowing how to meet people where they are and offer real support that makes a difference
Experience leading workshops or training sessions for adults, whether face-to-face or remotely over platforms like Zoom or MS Teams
Expressed confidence explaining rules, policies, or regulations clearly, whether you're talking to community members, coworkers, or government folks. Written or spoken, you know how to get your point across
Demonstrated hands-on experience with accounting software (like QuickBooks or Quicken) and can interpret budgets or financial statements without breaking a sweat, especially in a government or nonprofit setting
Administration and Management: Knowledge of planning, coordination, and execution of business functions, resource allocation, and production
Analytical Thinking/Problem Solving: uses a logical, systematic, sequential approach to address problems or opportunities or manage a situation by drawing on one's knowledge and experience base and calling on other references and resources as necessary
Oral and Written Communication: Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately
Public Service Motivation: Shows a commitment to serve the public. Ensures that actions meet public needs; aligns organizational objectives and practices with public interests

Provide a cover letter detailing your experience teaching adults and/or writing or proofreading technical documents, municipal or tribal documents, or financial documents
Three (3) references with current contact information - two (2) of which need to be former supervisors
Last three (3) performance evaluations (if available)
This position requires frequent travel to rural communities in Alaska, some of which have no commercial accommodations and requires the incumbent to sleep in city hall or in a school
Travel to these rural communities may be via small planes and other conveyances
