Safety Engineer – High-Energy Systems & Equipment Commissioning

GM Performance Power Units is seeking a Safety Engineer who will lead safety efforts for high-energy equipment and complex machinery in automotive manufacturing. This role involves ensuring safe installation, startup, and operation of high-voltage equipment, while managing safety programs and conducting safety reviews.

Responsibilities

Lead safety oversight for electrical systems, energy isolation, and protection from electrical shock and arc-flash hazards
Support equipment start-up and commissioning, including interlock checks, safety function testing, and coordination with equipment suppliers
Review electrical drawings and system diagrams to identify energy sources and safety requirements
Conduct safety reviews before equipment is energized to confirm all safeguards, guards, and controls are in place
Identify hazards across robotics, machining centers, conveyors, test systems, and automated lines
Manage safety programs related to electrical work, energy isolation, machine guarding, contractor safety, hot work, and confined space entry
Deliver training on electrical safety, energy isolation, safe equipment startup, and test system hazards
Support incident investigations and implement corrective actions
Review contractor safety plans, electrical work plans, and high-risk project scopes
Provide onsite safety support during shutdowns, equipment installations, and system energization

Required

Bachelor's degree in Safety, Engineering, Industrial Technology, or a related field
5+ years of safety or engineering experience in automotive, motor manufacturing, or another high-energy industrial setting
Hands-on experience supporting high-voltage equipment, electrical work, and complex machinery during installation and startup
Strong ability to read electrical and mechanical diagrams and understand energy sources and isolation points
Strong Excel skills for documentation, data analysis, and safety reporting
Experience conducting hazard assessments and implementing risk controls

Preferred

Professional safety certification (such as Certified Safety Professional or similar)
Experience with test systems, battery or electric motor equipment, inverters, or other high-energy processes
Background in automation, robotics, or industrial controls
Experience using methods such as cause analysis or root-cause investigation
