Special Assistant to the Sheriff (1,000-hour Administrative Assistant 3G)
Prince George's County Government provides a dynamic and inclusive workplace dedicated to serving the County's residents. The Special Assistant to the Sheriff will conduct detailed analyses and provide recommendations concerning the activities and mission of the Office of the Sheriff, while also performing project management assignments and maintaining confidentiality.

Responsibilities
Supervises the staff and activities of the Sheriff’s immediate office
Ensures that the Sheriff has adequate professional, clerical and technical support to perform the day-to-day operations required by the Office of the Sheriff
Plans, assigns, provides instruction and guidance, and supervises assigned support personnel utilizing knowledge of office practices and procedures and methods required to supervise the activities of subordinate personnel in the accomplishment of their normal and routine activities
Assures the efficiency of situations through planning, organizing and directing the activities of subordinates
Maintains an awareness of and advises the Sheriff of significant/sensitive issues and events that occur in a timely manner assuring that such events are appropriately recorded
Conducts staff meetings and takes appropriate action to resolve complaints and conflicts
Reviews all incoming documents and correspondence, phone messages to determine the action to be taken and refers all correspondence to appropriate
Bureau Chief for preparation of timely responses
Ensures that all responses are submitted on time and in proper format for the Sheriff's approval
Reviews and approves all responses to ensure that they are accurate and consistent with policy and procedures, as well as with previous correspondence on related subjects
Drafts letters, memos and other correspondence for the Sheriff as required
Coordinates the development of a variety of reports and data under the Sheriff's direction
Research management information and prepares reports as requested by the Sheriff or Chief Assistant Sheriff
Research, coordinates, supervises, oversees and expedites the efficient handling of staff and special projects as assigned by the Sheriff
Attends various functions to make presentations on behalf of the Sheriff
Attends both civic and governmental meetings and serves on committees
Advises the Sheriff and assists him in identifying agency goals establishing program priorities and evaluating utilization of personnel and equipment toward goal fulfillment
Provides assistance to the staff of County and State agencies, including Judges, elected officials Department/Agency Heads, officials, employees and the public and maintains an effective working relationship with them
Recommends new programs that will enhance the efficiency of the Office of the Sheriff
Serves as liaison for the Sheriff ensuring that necessary communication between staff and Sheriff is maintained effectively
Represents the Sheriff in a professional manner when interacting with local and State officials, civic and private Business organizations, members of governmental agencies and employees of the Office of the Sheriff ensuring that the desired goals of the Sheriff are communicated in a clear and concise manner
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree from an accredited College or University in Liberal Arts, one of the Social Sciences, or Public or Business Administration; or field closely related to assignment/functional areas of strategic administrative support, project management, and data analysis, and government relations
Two (2) years of progressively responsible administrative experience in government or business
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license
Must pass a pre-employment drug screening
Must pass a thorough background investigation
Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency
Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties, if applicable
Be willing and able to serve as an essential employee
Preferred
Previous public safety or local government experience
At least 2 years of strategic administrative support, project management, and data analysis, within a government setting
