Seasonal Herpetological Field Technician

Herpetological Resource and Management (HRM) is seeking passionate, responsible, and adaptable professionals to join their team. This role involves significant fieldwork across Michigan, including amphibian and reptile inventory, monitoring, wildlife clearance, and habitat restoration.

Responsibilities

Conduct wildlife surveys focused on Michigan's amphibians and reptiles and assist with habitat restoration
Assist with monitoring efforts of habitat restoration projects targeting amphibians and reptiles
Conducted targeted wildlife clearance as part of habitat restoration projects
Support long-term turtle conservation work
Utilize electronic equipment (e.g., GPS units, digital cameras, tablets) to collect accurate field data
Complete end-of-day data processing and upload for all fieldwork. For local assignments, this is performed at the main office. While on out-of-town travel, this duty is conducted at the day's final location (e.g., hotel, Airbnb)
Potential to assist with report preparation
Work independently and as part of a team in various field conditions, including adverse weather and remote locations
Travel for out-of-town surveys, including overnight stays, and potential week-long assignments
Accurately document findings and complete reports, as needed
Support other duties as assigned by supervisors or project managers

Required

Education: B.S. or higher in biology, zoology, wildlife ecology, natural resource conservation, or equivalent experience
Field Expertise: Ability to identify Michigan amphibians and reptiles by sight, sound, or using field guides
Technology Proficiency: Experience with GPS units (e.g., Garmin, Trimble), digital cameras, and tablets
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently or as part of a team
Comfort in working alone in field conditions
Physical fitness to work outdoors for extended periods and hike up to 5 miles over moderate terrain while carrying up to 30 lbs
Valid driver's license, a safe driving record, and reliable transportation
Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality

Preferred

At least one year of professional experience conducting wildlife surveys
Familiarity with ArcGIS Pro and database management tools
Technical report writing encouraged
