Principal Graphic Designer II for Communications

NEOGOV is seeking a Principal Graphic Designer II for Communications within the Montgomery County Planning Commission. This senior-level role is responsible for leading communication projects, providing technical guidance, and creating engaging visuals for public outreach and policy reports.

Responsibilities

Design and prepare various meeting and event materials, including displays, signs, photographs, event programs, maps, and PowerPoint presentations
Assist with Montgomery County Planning Commission courses and events
Develop copy for social media posts, press releases, the MCPC Monthly newsletter, the MCPC Annual Report, and other communications deliverables
Design and produce a wide range of visual materials, including publications, reports, brochures, newsletters, infographics, charts, maps, logos, displays, and social media content
Collaborate with planning staff to visually interpret technical and policy information
Design, create, and maintain interactive digital forms, HTMLs, web pages
Develop graphic ideas, themes, images, branding strategies and logos to promote an organization, program, or event
Create, produce and direct informational videos for the planning commission and other departments
Serve as a technical resource to other designers and staff, offering software guidance and design feedback
Assist onboarding new hires within the design team
Support the Deputy Director or Section Manager in tracking assignments, ensuring deadlines and quality standards are met
Liaise with internal and external production resources, including the county print shop and vendors
Maintain organized project files and ensure adherence to agency branding and accessibility standards
Engage in professional development to remain current on design trends, tools, and technologies
Perform other duties as assigned in support of the department’s design and communication goals

Required

Bachelor's degree in graphic design, communications, and/or public relations or related field, with at least six (6) years of experience; or an associate degree and eight (8) years of experience in a similar position with excellent graphic design and writing skills
Any equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the role
Advanced design skills in both print and digital environments, including layout, typography, branding, and visual storytelling
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), and experience with Canva, HTML design, and video or animation tools
Strong project management and coordination skills, including experience working across departments
Excellent communication skills and the ability to present and justify design decisions to non-designers
Ability to manage multiple deadlines, maintain quality control, and produce polished, accessible materials
Familiarity with print and digital production processes and file preparation for vendors
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
Must have the ability to travel throughout the county to fulfill the duties of the position. This may require a valid driver's license and/or access to reliable transportation, including travel to areas not served by public transit

Preferred

Experience mentoring or guiding junior staff without direct supervisory responsibility
Experience working in or with landscape architecture, planning or urban design sectors
Familiarity with accessibility and usability standards in public-sector design
Experience working in or supporting government or nonprofit communications
Knowledge of GIS-based graphic integration or spatial design tools (a plus, but not required)
