The California Department of State Hospitals is seeking an Attorney III to represent the department in court proceedings and provide legal advice on sensitive issues. This role operates with broad discretion to achieve the department's objectives.

Responsibilities

Represents the Department of State Hospitals (DSH) in court proceedings, at forensic and State Personnel Board (SPB) proceedings
Provides legal advice to DSH on the more difficult and sensitive issues involving the administration of all DSH facilities
Must operate with broad discretion and with minimal direction towards achieving DSH’s objectives

Required

Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
Active membership in the California State Bar
Minimum of five years of legal experience, including litigation experience
Experience in administrative law and/or mental health law
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information
Ability to represent the Department in court and administrative proceedings
