Senior Engineering Manager, Web Foundations, News Product

Responsibilities
Define the strategic roadmap by partnering with Engineering and Product leadership to identify, prioritize, and scope the highest-leverage opportunities to enhance the core news experience
Lead and execute complex, cross-functional engineering initiatives that deliver measurable improvements to site performance, reliability, and technical quality
Scale and evolve foundational backend services, such as personalization and sitemaps, so they can be expanded into new product contexts
Partner with the Native Foundations Senior Engineering Manager to improve the stability and performance of webview and hybrid contexts in our iOS and Android applications
Mentor and grow a high-performing team of 6–8 engineers, including Staff Engineers
Proactively partner with engineering teams across the organization towards News Product goals
Offer technical perspective while fostering inclusive decision-making that incorporates diverse perspectives
Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
Qualification
Required
2+ years of engineering team leadership experience
Demonstrated experience translating high-level goals into a clear, iterative technical strategy and driving execution
Demonstrated experience designing and leading comprehensive programs to improve system resilience and efficiency in a high-traffic environment
Expertise using observability (monitoring, logging, tracing) to proactively identify, diagnose, and resolve quality issues
Demonstrated ability to build collaborative, cross-team efforts that harness the full spectrum of expertise and viewpoints across the organization
Preferred
Experience leading engineering for a high-traffic, consumer-facing website
Experience managing frontend performance, optimization, and accessibility
Experience with modern web architectures (e.g., SSR, edge rendering, micro-frontends)
Experience architecting and scaling web personalization or recommendation systems
Experience with DataDog Real User Monitoring (RUM)
Experience in the news industry, or familiarity with content management systems and editorial workflows
Experience mentoring Staff+ engineers
