Engineering Assistant I or II - Central Design/Bridge Office
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is seeking Engineering Assistants to join a collaborative, professional environment where you’ll contribute to the planning and design of safe, efficient roadway and bridge projects. This role involves performing engineering work, participating in a career development program, and applying engineering principles to transportation-related activities.

Responsibilities
Actively prepares for professional engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams and completion/maintenance of required documentation
Applies engineering principles, methods and techniques to a wide variety of transportation-related activities
Collects engineering data at project sites
Participates in Career Development for the Engineering Assistants program which includes job rotation, training and continuing education
Performs design computations and plan preparations to include preparing plan sheets for construction projects
Performs engineering calculations for plan quantities as part of PS&E preparation activities
Performs engineering-related calculations and drafting/design work
Performs engineering-related duties in the field of transportation engineering
Prepares and checks plans, specifications and estimates (PS&E) and designs
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
Performs advanced and specialized engineering design work
Assists in training less experienced engineering assistants, specialists and/or technicians
Performs traffic barricade inspections, identifies problems and assists with resolution of traffic control plans
Reviews construction plans prepared by consultants
Reviews/designs and details bridge and structural elements
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS
Valid driver's license at the time of application
1 YEAR in ENGINEERING related experience for Engineering Assistant II
Participation in the Engineering Assistant Career Development Program (EACDP) requires that employees sign a Program Agreement, which outlines employee responsibilities and service time commitment
Mandatory: TX Engineer In Training Certificate for Engineering Assistant II
Some knowledge of transportation engineering terminology and fundamentals
Some knowledge of transportation design engineering principles, practices and methods and the application of engineering theory
Some knowledge of applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing, and compliance requirements
Some knowledge of The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
Proficient skill in using engineering workstations and applications of engineering technology
Proficient skill in reading and interpreting applicable plans, schematics, blueprints, and maps
Proficient skill in applying engineering principles, practices, and methods in job responsibilities
Proficient skill in performing calculations using algebra, trigonometry, and geometry
Proficient skill in maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals
Considerable knowledge of engineering designs for Engineering Assistant II
Considerable knowledge of plan review methods, processes and procedures for Engineering Assistant II
Considerable knowledge of highway construction and maintenance for Engineering Assistant II
Considerable knowledge of computer-aided drafting and design systems for Engineering Assistant II
Expert skill in applying engineering principles, practices, and methods in job responsibilities for Engineering Assistant II
