Responsibilities

Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs
Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling
Perform dynamic structural (shock) analyses utilizing finite element analysis (FEA) methods with the pre-/post-processor (FEMAP and NASTRAN, Abaqus, Hypermesh, Government codes) computer applications, perform hand calculations using textbook methods, and develop engineering calculation reports, check structural analyses reports
Responsible for leading dynamic and transient analysis methods, underwater explosion analysis and related projects, and will be responsible for training and mentoring junior engineers in these areas
Relied on as a project lead to plan, execute, and ensure objectives are met for projects of various scope

Required

Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience
Master's Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience
Ph.D. and 4 years of experience
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program

Preferred

The Shock Engineering and Advanced Analysis team is looking for an engineer with structural or mechanical background for support of all platforms (CVN, Special Projects, VCS, SSNX)
Background in fluid-structure interaction
Extensive knowledge of structural response and design requirements for surface ship or submarines
Extensive knowledge and experience with Finite Element Analysis software (Femap, Hypermesh, and/or Abaqus) and related first-principles methods
Experience in nonlinear material response, structural dynamics, mechanical response, and vibrations
Detailed experience and knowledge in shock qualification methods and requirements, including testing and extensions
Ability to execute new programs and old, i.e. FORTRAN, Matlab, python, etc
Ability to lead a team of junior engineers toward group and project goals
Leadership, mentoring and training experience
Skilled at project management with an ability to plan and execute tasks to meet program objectives
Experience working with NAVSEA and naval warfare centers (NUWC, NSWC-CD, NSWC-PD, NSWC-IHD)
Ability to communicate with internal and external customers in a professional manner
Skilled at technical writing and reporting and oral communication
Experience with high performance computing systems and nonlinear advanced analysis methods
