District 4 Transportation Engineering Summer Intern (12608401)
The South Carolina Department of Transportation is looking for summer interns to assist in various engineering activities across multiple fields. Interns will conduct inspections, assist in construction and maintenance activities, and perform traffic studies while gaining hands-on experience in the transportation engineering domain.
Civil Engineering
Responsibilities
Conducts inspections on contractors (mowing, griding, vegetation, installing traffic markings, etc.)
Works directly with crews to obtain quantities for drainage, paving, and bridge repairs
Works with permit technician on driveway and utility permits
Inspects placement of pavement markings
Assists certified engineering technician in performing inspection of contractors' work to ensure that materials and workmanship are all in accordance with plans and specifications
Inspects timber components for decay, splits, bearing, etc
Inspects concrete components for spalls, delamination, etc
Inspects steel components for corrosion, section loss, cracks, etc
Reviews previous bridge reports before an inspection
Works directly with crews to perform bridge maintenance activities including: establishing grade for pile caps and pile cut offs, placing/screeding concrete, tying reinforcing steel, cutting lumber, sanding/grinding steel beams/bearings/rebar, and drilling/anchoring concrete anchors to attach steel beams
Trains to make full penetration groove welds horizontal, vertical, and overhead
Conducts traffic studies by installing equipment, performing traffic counts, and analyzing data
Performs CADD work by creating and revising traffic plans and detour routes
Learns traffic signal design with exposure from the beginning to end of projects
Qualification
Required
A high school diploma; and or an approved acceptable equivalence
Applicants must be accepted into or currently enrolled in a two-year college or university program in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management
A motor vehicle operator's license is required
The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time
This position may require occasional travel
This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling
This position required driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs
May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies
This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise
