Responsibilities

Conducting surveys for Northern Spotted Owls by confirming owl presence using auditory detections and visual observation of color bands following well-established survey protocol
Caring for laboratory mice
Maintaining accurate field notes
Caring and maintaining field equipment and state-owned rental vehicles
Entering data in the field using the FieldMaps app on handheld devices
Working with online vegetation maps and aerial photographs
Describing vegetation characteristics, floristics, and physiography of owl roost and nest locations in project area
Collecting owl pellets to determine food habits
Working closely as needed with personnel of the U.S. Forest Service, BLM , U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, Oregon Dept. of Forestry, private landowners and other agencies, and
Other duties as assigned
Completion of in person and on-line safety and animal handler training as assigned
Use of desktop or laptop computers, tablets and smart phones to enter data or map owl locations
Maintain field notes
Coordinate work with crewmates and supervisor;Work collaboratively and inclusively with teammates

Required

Two years of college-level courses in (specific field of biological science); OR an equivalent combination of training and experience
Two years of college-level courses in Wildlife Science or a related field; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030
Previous field experience in remote or isolated environments with challenging terrain
Demonstrated orienteering skills including the use of maps, compass, and handheld GPS units
Commitment to working professionally and inclusively with people from all backgrounds
Ability to operate a 4-wheel drive vehicle

Preferred

Field experience conducting occupancy or demographic surveys for spotted owls
