Responsibilities

Create a high-performance engineering culture that can solve challenging technical problems, make effective tradeoffs and consistently deliver

Partner with engineers and Product, Design and Data counterparts to develop clear technical execution plans and milestones

Drive technical excellence, ensuring our systems are reliable, efficient, and secure and working well for the newsroom, readers, and business

Coach and mentor a team, supporting their growth and technical development

Cultivate a collaborative environment that emphasizes continuous learning and growth

Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

You will report to the Senior Director of News Product Web Engineering and partner closely with the Stories Senior Engineering Manager

Qualification

Required

1+ years of engineering team leadership experience

Experience managing production operations for high-availability systems

Demonstrated history of developing a high-performance team and growing its skills over time

Demonstrated history partnering with Product, Design, and Data to drive great solutions

Fluency in JavaScript applications, cloud deployments, observability, monitoring and alerting

Preferred

Experience managing complex frontends or systems that handle rapid traffic surges

Direct experience with digital journalism, CMS systems, and/or ProseMirror
