Research Informaticist
University of Utah Health Research is launching the Vollger Lab in January 2026, focusing on computational tools to study complex regions of the human genome. The Research Informaticist will play a key role in developing bioinformatics pipelines and collaborating with partners to advance genomic research.

Responsibilities
Developing and applying bioinformatics pipelines for processing and analyzing long-read sequencing data (PacBio HiFi, Oxford Nanopore)
Working with large-scale genomic, epigenomic ( DNA methylation, chromatin accessibility), and transcriptomic datasets
Contributing to genome assembly and comparative genomics analyses, particularly in complex and repetitive genomic regions
Building and maintaining reproducible workflows (Snakemake, Nextflow, or similar) and databases for data management
Collaborating with lab members and external consortium partners on multi-omic data integration
Assisting in the development of custom tools and visualization approaches for biological discovery
Synthesizing and presenting research both internally and externally
Qualification
Required
Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 6 years of directly related work experience
Requires a master's (or equivalency) + 4 years of directly related work experience
Experience with long-read sequencing analysis
Proficiency in a compiled programming language (e.g., C, C++, Rust)
Experience with a workflow language (e.g. Snakemake)
Demonstrated track record of software development
Familiarity with version control (Git/GitHub)
