The Juvenile Counselor Technician Intern will apply academic knowledge to meaningful projects in the County Juvenile Detention Center, supervising juveniles and assisting with various daily activities and supportive counseling.

Responsibilities

Actively seek knowledge and understanding of the organization, its industry, and relevant processes

Plans and supervises activities of the detainees

Shadow professionals, attend meetings, and observe daily operations to gain hands-on insights

Communicate effectively and professionally with colleagues and supervisors, both verbally and in writing

Approach tasks with a proactive mindset, identify potential challenges, and propose constructive solutions

Exhibit a positive attitude, maintain punctuality, and adhere to workplace dress code and etiquette

Demonstrate a willingness to learn new skills, adapt to changing priorities, and handle unforeseen tasks

Collect and analyze data or resource materials to support the writing of papers and reports

Work to gain a functional understanding of the topics discussed

Fulfill any academic requirements set by your educational institution as part of completing the internship

Assisting the Juvenile Counselor Technician with tasks and projects, including policy evaluation, trend analysis, and other outreach

Completing research assignments of interest to the intern and of use to County staff

Assists volunteers with activities that are planned for the juveniles

Promotes positive behavior of juveniles by attempting to modify antisocial attitudes, discouraging undesirable habits and encouraging worthwhile habits

Required

Must be currently enrolled at an Institution of Higher Learning (college or university); AND, currently pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, or Human Services

Working knowledge of the attitudes, problems and behavior patterns of juveniles under restraint

Working knowledge of the methods, procedures and practices of controlling and supervising juveniles confined to a detention center

Ability to supervise and control juveniles individually and in groups and to work with youth with behavioral problems

Ability to think and act quickly during emergencies

Ability to follow oral and written instructions

Ability to prepare standard reports

Ability to counsel juveniles in appropriate behaviors, attitudes, and habits
