Responsibilities

Join the Drug Overdose Surveillance and Epidemiology Unit in the Office of Drug User Health as the lead drug overdose epidemiologist and serve as the Director for the State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System (SUDORS)
Direct and oversee activities and staff for the State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System (SUDORS)
Lead the development and enhancement of the Coroners and Medical Examiners system in New York State; and collaborate with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in New York City
Supervise and provide guidance for epidemiology staff on the development of data analysis and data management plans and research design
Lead the Office of Drug User Health research, evaluation and performance monitoring activities utilizing drug overdose data and program, services, and public health interventions information

Required

Bachelor's degree in biology, biomedical science, environmental health, environmental science, epidemiology, infection control, public health, statistics/biostatistics, or a related degree
Five years of professional research experience in an appropriate field
Master's degree in an appropriate field may substitute for one year of experience
Ph.D. in an appropriate field may substitute for an additional year of experience
Related degrees may include Economics, Education, Mathematics, Medical Anthropology, Medical Geography, Nursing, Nutrition, Pharmacology, Psychology, Sociology, or other relevant Social Science, or Natural Science

Preferred

Strong background in public health surveillance and epidemiology
Public health and policy research, study design and execution
Analysis using epidemiological principles and methodologies
Experience in staff supervision and program management
Excellent interpersonal, presentation, written and verbal communication skills
Experience with SAS, SQL or other statistical software, relational databases and graphical software packages
Experience with large, population-based and other health-related data sets (e.g., SPARCS, ECLRS, vital statistics), disease registries and working with confidential data
Experience with information technology and systems used for electronic public health reporting
Experience with GIS data analysis and data visualization is desirable
