Controls Commissioning Engineer

Innovate is seeking an experienced PLC Controls Commissioning Engineer to deliver complex, high-profile projects across the United States and internationally. In this role, you will be responsible for commissioning, modifying, troubleshooting, and supporting PLC-based automation systems at customer facilities, ensuring projects are delivered safely and to high-quality standards.

Responsibilities

Commission and integrate PLC-based control systems for new and upgraded automation equipment
Program, test, and troubleshoot PLCs including:
Allen-Bradley
Develop and execute Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) procedures alongside Project Managers and customers
Debug and optimise control systems to meet performance and safety standards
Integrate third-party equipment including HMIs, SCADA systems, industrial networks (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Modbus), and robotics where applicable
Provide both on-site and remote technical support
Create and maintain technical documentation (control designs, schematics, change logs)
Ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70E, and relevant US industry standards
Act as the primary technical liaison between the customer and project team
Deliver clear reporting on commissioning progress and troubleshooting activities
Represent the company professionally at all customer sites

Required

5–7+ years' experience in industrial automation as a: PLC Controls Engineer, Commissioning Engineer, Field Service Engineer
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Instrumentation, or related field
Strong hands-on PLC programming and troubleshooting experience
Experience with HMI and SCADA development and integration
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and P&IDs
Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
Strong communication skills and customer-facing confidence
Willingness to travel extensively (up to 80%), including extended site assignments
Comfortable working in industrial environments
