Senior Mechanical Project Engineer
Standard Carbon is a climate infrastructure company deploying the Carbon Bridge™, a modular carbon-to-fuel platform. The Senior Mechanical Project Engineer will be responsible for the technical ownership of Carbon Bridge™ deployments in NYC, managing the integration of mechanical and energy systems into existing buildings and coordinating with various stakeholders.
Responsibilities
Own end-to-end mechanical execution of Carbon Bridge™ deployments, from site feasibility through commissioning and turnover
Translate Carbon Bridge™ product specifications into site-specific mechanical, electrical, thermal, and process integration designs
Serve as the primary technical point of contact for building owners, engineers of record, contractors, and inspectors
Design and coordinate integration with existing: Boilers, CHP systems, combustion exhaust stacks, Gas infrastructure (on-site use and/or pipeline injection), Electrical service (high-load electrolyzer systems), Cooling, ventilation, and water systems
Review and approve equipment layouts, tie-ins, clearances, noise, access, and serviceability for containerized installations
Lead or support permitting strategy and execution with: NYC Department of Buildings (DOB), FDNY, NYC DEP / NYSDEC (as applicable), Utilities (Con Edison, National Grid)
Coordinate with RDPs, expediters, and consultants to move filings efficiently through NYC review processes
Ensure compliance with NYC Building Code, Mechanical Code, Fire Code, fuel gas regulations, and site-specific constraints
Manage electric service upgrades, load studies, and interconnection coordination for high-power electrolysis systems
Coordinate gas interconnection, metering, and operating requirements for renewable natural gas export or on-site use
Support energy rate, demand management, and dispatch strategy coordination tied to Carbon Bridge™ operation
Support technical eligibility and documentation for: NYSERDA programs, Utility incentives, Emissions and decarbonization compliance pathways
Provide mechanical and operational inputs required for incentive applications (without acting as the program administrator)
Oversee mechanical installation, sequencing, and field execution with contractors and vendors
Participate in site walks, inspections, punch lists, and acceptance testing
Lead or support commissioning of capture, electrolysis, methanation, thermal recovery, and balance-of-plant systems
Help develop repeatable mechanical standards, details, and deployment playbooks as Carbon Bridge™ scales across NYC
Provide feedback to product and engineering teams based on field experience
Qualification
Required
Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in New York State (Mechanical or related discipline strongly preferred)
7+ years of experience delivering complex mechanical or energy infrastructure projects in NYC
Direct experience with NYC DOB permitting, inspections, and construction workflows
Strong background in HVAC, industrial process systems, energy systems, or large-scale retrofits
Experience coordinating with utilities, inspectors, contractors, and building operators
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-moving environment
Willingness to spend significant time in the field across NYC
Preferred
Experience with carbon capture, fuel gas systems, hydrogen, RNG, CHP, or industrial process equipment
Familiarity with containerized or modular energy systems
Experience working in union construction environments
Knowledge of NYC decarbonization regulations (e.g., Local Law 97)
Comfort operating as a senior, owner-side engineer with broad responsibility
